The accolade was announced by Frances Ridout, Director of the QMLAC, who expressed profound gratitude for Alex Laing’s unwavering commitment to the Centre’s mission. Over the years, Alex has played a pivotal role in the operation and expansion of QMLAC’s projects, notably the SPITE for Schools initiative, which aims to provide legal advice and support to students in challenging educational environments.
Frances Ridout shared a particularly touching anecdote, recalling the impact Laing had when he sat alongside a student during a difficult workshop session, ensuring they did not feel alone amid the turmoil of their educational experience.
As the SPITE project celebrates its 10th anniversary, Alex Laing’s contributions have proven invaluable. Not only has he been instrumental in advocating for the project within Coram Chambers, but his leadership has encouraged fellow barristers to engage actively, leading to an exponential increase in the number of cases and workshops facilitated by the Centre.

The Fellowship award was presented during a celebratory event on 10th April, held at The Octagon, Queen Mary University of London. The evening was a joyous affair, bringing together lawyers, barristers, students, employees, volunteers and supporters of the QMLAC to celebrate their collective efforts in pro bono legal service. With speeches and award presentations, attendees had an opportunity to reflect on the Centre’s achievements, their incredible team and future aspirations.
Coram Chambers congratulates Alex Laing on this latest recognition, firmly believing that his commitment to justice and education will continue to inspire others to follow in his esteemed footsteps.
