Coram Chambers is proud to announce that Alex Laing and Maya Achan, have been featured in the August issue of Family Law.

The article delves into the contentious history of the British Indian Ocean Territory (‘BIOT’) and the impact of recent litigation in the BIOT Supreme Court, specifically concerning the use of wardship and the Children Act 1989.

This significant achievement follows the recent coverage of the case in The Guardian news, highlighting the pivotal judgment (CT, RT, AAA, RK, KT) and its impact on the assessment, support, and protection of vulnerable, asylum-seeking children in the BIOT. The combination of an archaic duty of allegiance to the Crown and domestic child protection legislation has played a crucial role in aiding these children, fifty-six years after independence was first celebrated.

Alex Laing, a leading barrister at Coram Chambers, has been recognised for his exceptional expertise in children and finance law, particularly in cases with an international element. His track record of excellence includes being awarded the Family Law Awards: Junior Barrister of the Year, a testament to his unparalleled dedication and proficiency in the field.

Maya Achan, a promising pupil barrister at Coram Chambers, has already made significant contributions by representing clients in private children’s cases, with a focus on handling serious allegations of domestic abuse and coercive control. During her pupillage, Gray’s Inn acknowledged her outstanding merit and dedication through the Senior Scholarship award.
