About

Marcia Willis Stewart KC (Hon) is the Managing Partner and a Director of Birnberg Peirce Ltd.

She is a talented human rights lawyer with expertise in Inquests, Inquiries and actions against the state involving government departments, the police and prison services. She is an experienced, shrewd, civil litigator and a skilled negotiator, who fights passionately for justice for individuals and communities whose rights have been violated.

Marcia responds to each individual, and each case, with equal commitment, care and rigour. Whether she is representing individuals whose voices and stories are not ordinarily heard or working on a case which is considered ‘high profile’, she brings the same humanity and fervour to the fight for justice.

Her casework history includes:

  • Leading a team of thirty lawyers who represented seventy-seven mainly Liverpudlian families at the Hillsborough Inquests, the longest running jury inquest in the UK. In 2016, the jury declared the ninety-six people who died were unlawfully killed.
  • Representing many bereaved, survivors and former residents of the Grenfell Tower Fire, where seventy-two residents died.
  • Acting for families in inquests and police actions involving police shootings (including Jean Charles de Menezes and Mark Duggan) and for families whose loved ones have died in other circumstances (Camber Sands drownings and hospice deaths).
  • Acting for the family of Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman in their complaints to the police and the prosecution of the two police officers who took and distributed photographs of the sisters.

Besides her legal work Marcia is a trustee of  Synergi which is an ambitious and exciting programme of work which focuses on the intersection of racial justice and mental health and the newly formed Black Equity Organisation.  She is also committed to mentoring and encouraging young lawyers.
